BIDENGINE FOR BUSINESS OWNERS
Winning more commercial, private and government work
The most important aspect of any business — no matter your industry or model — is creating and preserving steady cash flow.
The second is turning predictable revenue into a science.
Over the past year, I’ve spoken with roughly 20 business owners across the country. In every conversation, I take the time to understand the main catalyst that stops growth.
One answer comes up again and again:
Building on the edge with limited and unpredictable cash flow.
This is what people mean by the “peaks and valleys” of business — the seasonality that never seems to go away. The question is: does it always have to be this way? Or can the business owner focus on revenue-generating activities instead of fearing the unknown?
In this newsletter, I want to share three ideas:
Understanding the business cycle
Creating winning outcomes
Creating predictable revenue
Understanding the business cycle
According to Investopedia, business cycles are fluctuations in the aggregate economic activity of a nation. A cycle consists of expansions in many economic activities occurring at about the same time, followed by similarly broad contractions. This sequence is recurrent, but the phases don’t always last the same amount of time.
What that means for your business: when people, businesses, and the broader economy have money, they spend more. They renovate homes, eat out more, and invest in projects. When money contracts, spending contracts too — and that contraction flows straight into your revenue and cash flow.
If you’re in construction, you already feel this. When money gets expensive — during a recession or economic contraction — fewer commercial projects get built, owner margins get tighter, and timelines stretch out. This is when federal government contracting becomes virtually the only reliable source of income. But federal work operates under different laws and processes than commercial or state and local work. Mastering those is essential if you want to win it.
Creating winning outcomes

A business that wants to survive the cycle has to consider multiple revenue sources: private, commercial, and government — or B2C, B2B, and B2G.
Because your business is also tied to the broader market — cost, supply chain, manufacturing, trade, tariffs, taxes, labor — you have to apply those variables to your own planning. We can’t predict the future, but we do have historical maps and data points that help us make better decisions.
If your company relies on 90% residential work and 10% commercial or municipal work, you will feel every economic cooling draft for months — sometimes years. That owner starts chasing insurance rebuilds, property maintenance, homeowner subscriptions, and municipal bids just to survive.
Creating predictable revenue

That’s exactly why we built BidEngine.

Our team sources, estimates, and submits bids on your behalf. You approve what you want to pursue. We handle the heavy lifting.
If you’re tired of the peaks and valleys, let’s talk.
